Kitchen-themed Mezuzah Case
I wanted a mezuzah case for the kitchen. I wanted it to be vaguely food-themed, and I didn't want it to be expensive.
75 cents later:
 | Yes, the humble Rolo (hechshered by Circle-K, if you were wondering). Make a cardboard tube that's about the same size as the tube of Rolos, by rolling a piece of cardboard three inches by 4.5. Tape it together. Leave both ends open. (note: Tape dies in a relatively short time. You can use PVA glue if you like. It's messier.) Don't worry if it folds itself a bit and doesn't make a perfect cylinder, it doesn't need to. |
 | Draw round the end of the tube to make a circle which fits over the end. Cut it out, trim it to size, tape it down. Also make a tab of cardboard about 3/4 inch long, and tape it to the end of the tube such that about half of that protrudes. This is to hang it up. Make another such tab for the other end, but leave that end open. Align the tabs by lying it on the table and checking that they're both lying more or less flat. |
 | Unwrap the foil very, very carefully - don't tear it. Dispose of the Rolos somehow. |

 | ...so that you can put the mezuzah in (halakhic note: remember to put it in the right way up, and use a kosher mezuzah. Often even mezuzot labelled kosher and on sale in the Judaica stores are honestly and truly not kosher - you can tell, if the letters touch each other it's immensely bad news - don't buy them without looking at them - you get the idea). Slide the Rolo jacket back on - if it won't go on, peel it open, wrap it round, and stick it with a bit of tape on the back, where it won't show. |
